Assignment 9: Testing the Hypothesis, Pt.2
Who: After my interviews I found out that there are certain groups that
fall outside of my boundary. These are shoppers who are more experienced and
tend to be more responsible. I had initially narrowed out my target audience to
be college students who cook at home frequently, but I had also later decided to
broaden the market to people who in general cook at home frequently/ eat at
home a lot. After speaking to three other parents and more (graduate) students
I realized that my initial narrow market was more accurate. I did think however
think that those who spent more on food a week would be more prone to wasting more food but
after my interviews I realized that the two key aspects to take into account are
1) those who have more experience with food management ( so those who have been
shopping on their own for at least 3 years and 2) those who are more
responsible when it comes to food management, regardless of age.
What: After speaking with the younger interviewees I did identify one
need that can’t be met with this solution, mainly because it comes from the individual;
that is, having self-control and not buying unnecessary items. Although the app
can help reduce the likelihood of someone forgetting to use something, it can’t
prevent people from overbuying and eventually leading for food to spoil because
the person has too much that has to be used quickly.
Why: The outsiders don’t really have a need, mainly because they are
more responsible and more knowledgeable when it comes to food management. The
need for those in the market is ironically, hopefully, a temporary one. The
hope is that the app will teach those who aren’t, to be more aware when it
comes to food waste and management.

Inside
the boundary
|
Outside
the boundary
|
|
Who:
|
Those
who are starting to grocery shop and cook alone for the first time and eat
more at home than outside.
|
Those
who already have more experience grocery shopping and are more responsible /aware
when it comes to minimizing food waste.
Those
who go out to eat more than they cook at home.
|
|
What:
|
To be
aware of when things are going bad and/or if they can still be used
|
To
help people control their impulse buys and overbuy
|
|
Why:
|
People
are not well prepared to start taking responsibility over their food
purchases and are not fully educated when it comes to food management and
safety.
|
It is
very difficult to control a person’s actions.

Hey Nicole! I think your idea is great but it might be hard to encourage others to use it and really track the food they are buying or wasting. It would definitely be great for those who need more organization when buying food but as you said, those with experience might not have a need for this app. In a way I do think that your app could help people from overbuying, maybe you could incorporate an aspect with recommendations on how much to buy of each product for a specific food item. Good luck with this idea!!
