Assignment 8: Solving the Problem

Opportunity: reducing food waste at home

Solution: So, my idea requires a lot of collaboration from companies. It starts at the cash register and involves having an account and a card connected to an app. Once the customer arrives at the cash register, they give their card to be swiped and the process begins. Once every item is swiped with its specific barcode that item goes into the apps system, which  analyzes the information and produces results on the persons app. This information consists of how much of that product they bought and when this product is meant to expire/go bad. Now every time they use this product they have to login how much of it they used so the app can then keep track of how much they have left and remind the person to use it before it goes bad.

  1. Hey Nicole, well-written post.

To start out with, I like to see the ambition behind this solution to food waste, especially having to reach out to multiple companies for backing on this potential opportunity. In today’s world, I couldn’t think of a better way to remind consumers of unused foods and beverages than an app on their phone. This method is very inexpensive and efficient.

  2. Hi Nicole, I think this is a great idea for food waste. I know that I try to cook at home most of the time and waste food sometimes. Notifications to remind the person that an item is going to expire soon would be very helpful. This is an efficient and easy way to reduce food waste especially since everything is done on phones nowadays.
