Assignment 13: Reading Reflection No.1
1.
What surprised you the most? Although they were many things that
surprised me about Andrew Carnegie what surprised me the most was probably the
age at which he was accomplishing things. Not only did he start working at age
13, as many kids of that decade were, but he was already even starting to make
a name for himself. He always wanted to do more and be better and set standards
for himself and with that mindset he got himself promoted before he was even 16
years old.

What about the entrepreneur did you most admire? I definitely admire
Andrew Carnegie’s perseverance. He had to start working at a young age and although
that sounds harsh, for him he just saw it as an opportunity. As I said before,
he always kept pushing himself, even at a young age. He was hell bent on
improving himself and was really mature even before becoming a man. At 14 he
was the family breadwinner and was always looking to get a better position.

What about the entrepreneur did you least admire?
It was a bit difficult to find something, but I would have to say that sometimes
Carnegie would cloak his self-interest in humanitarian causes.

Did the entrepreneur encounter adversity and failure? If so,
what did they do about it? Although Carnegie had somewhat of a hard upbringing,
he would always try to be the best at what he did. He made connections, made a
name for himself, improved his skills, worked hard and that’s what eventually
got home to be one of the most success

5. What competencies did
you notice that the entrepreneur exhibited? Since he was young, he was good
with figures, religiously inclined, hell bent on improving himself, hard-working
and grew up in family of radical political pamphleteers and speechmakers which
I believe contributed to his outspoken nature.

Identify at least one part of the reading that was confusing to
you. I can’ really say I was confused by any part of the reading. I believe
that the biography depicted a detailed picture of who Andrew Carnegie was, why
he took certain actions and how he came to be who he was.
7.
If you were able to ask two questions to the entrepreneur,
what would you ask? Why? I would ask if there was anything he would have done
differently and who he had the greatest influence on him in his life. I would
ask him these questions because I’m curious to know what he would change even
though he was aa very meticulous person.
8. For fun: what do you think the entrepreneur's opinion was of
hard work? Do you share that opinion? I believe he thought that hard work was how
much you much time, effort and passion you put into something you believe in. I
believe I share this opinion because for some people hard work can be confused
with just being able to get something done when in reality I think the means
are what counts to get to the end.

ReplyDeleteWow, it is super surprising to hear that Andrew Carnegie was so successful at a young age, he must have grown up and matured so fast. I totally agree with your third point, for me it was a little hard to find something I did not admire because life is so aimed towards success and money. I feel like all of these entrepreneurs had a lot in common, especially being hardworking! I really like your questions you would ask your entrepreneur as well; if I had the chance I would ask those questions too.
Hey Nicole, I really enjoyed reading about Andrew Carnegie from your post. I felt like I read the whole book in just the span of a few minutes. Well, maybe not the whole book, but you summarized the nuts and bolts of it really well. The thing I liked most about Andrew Carnegie was how he saw everything as an opportunity, not an obstacle.
