Assignment 12: Figuring Out Buyer Behavior No. 1
Segment:
The segment I have chosen is college students who are living on their own for
the first time.
Interview
summaries: All three of my interviewees became aware of their need around the
second to third time they had to throw away food that had spoiled. They all seemed to agree that they didn’t become
aware of the need the first time because they just viewed it as an innocent
mistake and weren’t really planning on it happening again. They recognized however
that once it happened again, they realized that they still were being forgetful.
None of them came up with a plan or took “action” to solve their problem but
they all rather said that they made a mental note so that next time they were
at the supermarket they would buy less food. One of my interviewees however
said that she started to make a more detailed mental plan of her meals for the week
when she was shopping. She described that she would think, “Okay, well I know I
always go out for lunch Tuesdays and Thursdays, which means that I’ll be having
about 10 meals at home, so I shouldn’t get more than 7 pieces of chicken/meat..”.
With my findings I found that 1. People actually didn’t recognize their need or
even their mistake until it was repeated and 2. No one was actually looking for
a solution but rather decided to take it into their own hands and hope that
they were able to correct themselves next time.
How would
I describe this segment? I would say that this segment is aware of a problem
that is occurring but isn’t really sure how to solve it other than just taking
up responsibility for it. In the same way, other than asking external sources
for help they use internal resources and rely on their own capability to remember.
Hey Nicole! Being a 19 year old college student who has also been living on my own for only about 2 years now I can say I have thrown away far too much food. I am surprised to hear that no one really took time to plan out each one of their meals to reduce waste. Its kinda crazy that the life of a college student is so chaotic and busy that we do not even have time to plan out what we eat enough so that we do not produce food waste. I definitely agree with you that this segment is completely aware of their problem, they just have a tough time figuring out a feasible way to efficiently stop their food waste.
ReplyDeleteHey Nicole, I loved your post and the design of your blog page. I really found myself relating to the people you interviewed, and noticed that I do a lot of the same things these people do. My question is, do you think this problem is limited to college students? Or do you believe this may be a universal issue?
ReplyDeleteHi Nicole, I've been guilty of throwing my food and drinks away because they reached expiration too. It's a problem that can be solved mentally, but at times it's more challenging than one would think. Sometimes when I go to the grocery store I want to buy everything that catches my eye. I'll buy an abundance of items then realize when I get home I want to buy Pizza Hut. I then end up spending more money and continue to eat out. So I just try to make stops to a grocery store and pick something up and cook it that night. Usually, that works out best for me rather than bulk buying.
